Scope and Content Rope and sail works, No 204 Elliot Street, Glasgow This works was rebuilt in about 1869 for John & Black & Co, rope and sailmakers, after a fire. The walls of the two lower storeys survived the fire, and the upper two floors were rebuilt at that time. In 1881 the firm were, among other things, ships' outfitters. This shows the building from the south-east, with two sets of hoist doors giving easy access to all levels of the building. The break between the pre- and post-fire work is obvious. By 1924 the building was being used as a wool and fertiliser store, and in 1965 the building was still being used as a wool store by two firms, Stewart Bros and G J Roberts, both wool brokers. It was demolished in the late 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
