Scope and Content Balornock Engine Shed, Glasgow This large locomotive depot was built in 1916 by the Caledonian Railway as the main-line locomotive depot for its services from Glasgow to the north and east. It replaced a shed in the company's St Rollox Works, which had become inadequate. This shows the depot from the north-east. The shed in which locomotives were serviced is in the centre, and to the left is the gable of the coaling stage, which was a manually-operated one. The steel frame on the right is part of one of the Red Road tower blocks, the tallest in Glasgow. This depot was designed for servicing steam locomotives. mainly working from Buchanan Street Station. It closed in 1967 when that station closed, and was demolished in 1969. The railway past it is still in use, but services on it now use Queen Street Station. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
