Scope and Content Arden Limeworks, Corslet Road, Glasgow The seams of limestone outcropping at Darnley were commercially very important, as they yielded a strongly hydraulic lime particularly suited to the construction of structures to resist the action of water. From about 1874 the limestone here was worked by Alan Kirkwood. This shows the ruins of the limekilns during clearance of the site prior to the development of housing in the area. There were two pairs of single-draw kilns built into the bank, seen here, with a circular free-standing brick kiln in between. The burnt lime was crushed and packed in a large building in front of the kilns, which had been demolished by 1965. The works was linked to the local quarries and to Nitshill Station, by private railway until 1954, and closed in about 1959. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
