Scope and Content Excelsior Iron and Steel Works, Excelsior Street, Motherwell, North Lanarkshire This works was established in 1866 by John Williams & Co to make malleable iron. The firm bought the nearby Camps colliery to secure a suitable supply of fuel, and in 1879 were among the first firms in Scotland to start open-hearth steel manufacture. This shows the engine house of the rolling-mill beam engine which the firm brought up with them from the Black Country of Staffordshire. The building is seen from the south-east. The red and white brick construction, with arched openings is typical of 1860s industrial buildings in the west of Scotland. This engine continued to drive the rolling mills in the works until about 1960. By that time the firm John Williams (Wishaw) Ltd was re-rolling steel made elsewhere. The works closed soon after this photograph was taken, and has since been demolished and the site redeveloped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
