AN 2121

Description View from North-East.

Date 1970

Catalogue Number AN 2121

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 682617

Scope and Content View from north-east of Nos 93-119 Victoria Road, Dundee These late 19th-century tenements, now demolished, were notable for their decorative details. Tenements allow many people to live in flatted accommodation, accessed by shared stairs, and with communal facilities, such as drying greens and wash-houses. This photograph shows the tenements with their prominent turrets. A string-course runs above the first-and second floor windows. Shops and a bar occupy the ground floor. Crow stepped gables and brackets at the wall-head add richness to the design. The Baronial style of this building is intended to reflect the Victorian fashion for historical styles drawn from Scotland's past. The corbelled turrets and carved stonework of these tenements suggests they were designed for wealthier residents. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
