Scope and Content Fort William aluminium works, Highland Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Fort William aluminium works and hydro-power station, taken during World War II. Pipelines carrying water to the hydro-electric plant at the Lochaber aluminium smelter can be seen running down from the Ben Nevis range to the east. This was one of three such plants in the Highlands. The German Luftwaffe took aerial photographs of parts of Scotland throughout World War II. The photographs were used for intelligence work, such as selecting targets, assessing bombing accuracy and finding equipment and defensive positions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
