Scope and Content Excavation of vallum ditch north of Reilig Odráin, Iona, Argyll and Bute The monastery founded by St Columba in 563 AD on Iona was one of the most important centres of Irish religious life for over two centuries. Surveys and excavations have identified extensive remains of this monastery in the area of the medieval abbey. This 6m-wide vallum ditch has been dated to the late 6th-early 7th century and remained in use throughout the Early Christian period. It may have acted as a permanent drain and storm-water channel as well as a boundary. The vallum or rampart, which was mentioned by Adomnan in his Life of Columba, c.690 AD, was a normal feature of any Irish monastery and formed its legal and spiritual boundary. In many cases, an earlier fortification was reused as a monastic enclosure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
