Scope and Content Gravestone of John Miller, Kilspindie Parish Church and Old Parish Church, Perth & Kinross This detail of the gravestone shows a shield and palm fronds (emblems of Resurrection), and a skull and crossed bones (emblems of death). The skull is remarkable for its heart-shaped nose cavity and 'ear', menacing narrowed eye sockets, and grinning teeth. The carvings of skulls on gravestones vary widely in anatomical accuracy and style. Some masons carved very simple circles with two drilled holes for eye sockets and a row of incised teeth, whilst others attempt to suggest the form of the skull by indicating the jawbones, or back of the head. Some examples even show two rows of teeth, and a further smile below the jaw! This gravestone commemorates John Miller, who died in 1737. It is inscribed: 'In memory of/JOHN MILLER husband/to Isabel Duncan who died/13th April 1737 aged 71 years'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
