Scope and Content Perth Waterworks, Tay Street, Perth, Perth & Kinross The original works on this site was built in 1832 to designs by Adam Anderson, architect and engineer. It contained a steam pump and boiler to pump water from a well beside the River Tay into a large cast-iron cistern, from which pipes carried it round the city. This shows the steam pumping engine installed in the early 20th century to replace the original pump. It is in an extension built to house it. The engine was built by Douglas & Grant of Kirkcaldy. The pumps are below the engine. In 1973 the old works was restored and converted into a visitor centre. This involved the demolition of this engine and its extension. The building was again converted, this time into an art gallery, in 1992. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
