Scope and Content Mungal Foundry, Bainsford, Falkirk This foundry was built from 1897 by Carron Company to increase their capacity for making light castings. The company had been established in 1759 as the first large integrated iron works in the world, and had developed a wide range of products. This shows the foundry from the south-east. There are two ranges of single-storeyed brick shops, with nine bays of moulding shops and three bays of fitting shops. The cupola melting furnaces can be seen near the centre. To the right are the company's blast furnaces, closed in 1963. The closure of the blast furnaces in 1963 marked the beginning of a steady decline, due largely to declining demand for cast-iron products as plastics, welded steel and concrete substituted for them. This foundry closed in about 1970 and has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
