Scope and Content Barrowfield Works, No 49 Solway Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1902 by Carsons Ltd, chocolate manufacturers. The main range was built in two stages. The first two floors were constructed in 1904, and the top floor was added in 1919. Both phases were designed by Duncan & Copland, architects. This shows the works from the south-east. The large windows were necessary as chocolate making and packaging was then done largely by hand, by large numbers of women workers, and lots of natural light was essential. Note the concrete lintels of the 1919 addition. The works, latterly in the ownership of Cowans Ltd, was out of use by the mid-1960s, and has since been demolished. Chocolates were much in vogue from the 1920s to the 1950s as an acceptable courtship gift from young men to their sweethearts. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
