Scope and Content Scotstoun Mills, Scotstoun Mill Road, Glasgow These mills are on the site of two medieval millsteads on the River Kelvin, Glasgow's largest and most reliable source of water power. Scotstoun Mills were developed from about 1847 by John White as flour mills. Originally grinding using millstones, the mills were adapted to roller milling in 1877. This shows the frontage of the mills to the River Kelvin looking across Partick Central Station signal box. This large mill, with its Venetian Gothic water-tower, was designed by W F McGibbon, and built in 1898. John White & Sons was eventually taken over by Spillers Ltd, who owned the mills in 1964. They in turn became part of Rank Hovis MacDougall, now Rank Hovis, who were still operating the mills in 2002. The 1898 block was demolished in the early 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
