Scope and Content Cup-and-ring marked rocks at Ormaig, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute Cup-and-ring markings appear across Scotland, but are particularly abundant in the Kilmartin valley. Each group differs in content and the type and size of carvings. At Ormaig there are two main groups and four lesser sets, comprising over 200 motifs. Looking across the rock face, it is possible to see the variety of carvings. In this area there are 27 cups with single rings, four with double rings and three rosettes. There is also a short section of a channel, a groove-like design. Other important groups of carvings can be found at the Machars of Wigton, Strathtay and in Northumberland. The function of the carvings is unknown. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
