Scope and Content Standing stones at Salachary, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute This stone alignment remained unrecorded until 1961 when it was discovered by archaeologists from the Ordnance Survey. Originally this group of monoliths stood in a line arranged along a north-south axis, though only one, the northern stone, still stands upright. This view shows the northern and central stones. The Kilmartin valley area is particularly rich in standing stones and stone circles though their purpose largely remains unknown. Possibly some served as territorial or route markers.
