Scope and Content Cathcart Mill, Nos 23-5 Netherlee Road, Glasgow This mill is probably on a medieval site, built as a manorial mill for the owners of the nearby castle and its supporting estate and village. A new meal mill was built here in the 18th century, and was taken over in 1812 by Solomon Lindsay and converted into a cardboard mill. Snuff grinding was added in 1814. This shows the frontage of the mill to Snuffmill Road, with the 18th-century Netherlee Road Bridge on the right. The internal wheels were in the basement of the mill. The snuff mill was in the wing nearest to the bridge. This building was abandoned as a cardboard mill in the early 20th century, and then served as a garage for the adjacent dwelling house. It fell into disrepair and in the mid-1970s was almost completely rebuilt by Glasgow's Parks Department using job creation labour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
