Scope and Content Ness Viaduct, Inverness, Highland This viaduct was opened in 1862 by the Inverness & Ross-shire Railway, and designed by Joseph Mitchell, engineer. It had five main spans, each 22.2m long, with approach spans at both ends. This shows the viaduct from the south-west, with the works of the Thornbush Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd visible through the right-hand end arch. Note the fine quality of the masonry, and the slenderness of the piers. This viaduct was washed away in a flood in 1989, and replaced in 1990 by a three-span welded steel bridge. The approach spans were retained, and on the south side Joseph Mitchell's name is still to be seen inscribed in the masonry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
