Scope and Content Dunrobin Castle and gardens, Sutherland, Highland Dunrobin Castle is located on the east coast of Sutherland, north of the village of Golspie. The traditional seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland, it remains a private residence owned by the Countess of Sutherland. This view from the north-east shows the front entrance to Dunrobin Castle (centre) with the mid-19th century formal gardens behind. Part of the walled kitchen gardens can also be seen (centre left). Despite its ancient origins, Dunrobin Castle's appearance is largely the creation of Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860), the architect of the House of Commons, who was employed between 1835-1850 to remodel the castle in the Scottish Baronial style. Barry also designed the formal gardens. The castle interior was redesigned by Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929) following a fire in 1915. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
