Scope and Content Dunrobin Castle and gardens, Sutherland, Highland Dunrobin Castle is located on the east coast of Sutherland, north of Golspie. The traditional seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland, it remains a private residence owned by the Countess of Sutherland. The castle is first mentioned in 1401 and was remodelled and enlarged in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. This view from the south shows the castle (top) above the mid-19th century formal gardens (centre right). The walled kitchen garden with greenhouses can also be seen (foreground). To the right of these is a boat slipway. The castle resembles a French chateau and is largely the creation of Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860) who was employed by the Sutherlands to remodel the castle in the Scottish Baronial style. Barry also designed the formal gardens. Following a fire in 1915, Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929) was employed to redesign the interior of the castle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
