Scope and Content Hand crane, Upper Wharf, Muirtown Locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness, Highland The Caledonian Canal was constructed between Clachnaharry on the Beauly Firth to Corpach on Loch Linnhe between 1803 and 1822, to designs by Thomas Telford. It was improved in about 1847, when this quay was constructed. This shows the quay from the north-east, with a hand crane, probably dating from c.1847, and made in Leeds by S Harker. To the right is a wooden transit shed, and in between is the MV Scot II, a tug and icebreaker used in the 1960s for excursions from Muirtown to Loch Ness. Between the time of its construction and the 1930s this quay was the Inverness terminus of regular passenger and goods services from Banavie at the west end of the canal.
