Scope and Content Bridge-keeper's house, Tomnahurich Swing Bridge, Caledonian Canal, Inverness, Highland The Caledonian Canal was constructed between Clachnaharry on the Beauly Firth to Corpach on Loch Linnhe between 1803 and 1822, to designs by Thomas Telford, and provided a short-cut for small craft wishing to go from one side of Scotland to the other. This shows the bridge-keeper's house at Tomnahurich Swing Bridge, on the north-western side of Inverness. This bridge carries the main A82 road to Fort William and the west coast, and in order to cope with increasingly heavy traffic, it was replaced in the 1930s. The bridge-keeper's house dates from the opening of the canal in 1822. After 1965 this house became disused, as bridge-keepers were no longer required to be resident adjacent to their bridges. It lay empty for several years, but has recently been re-occupied. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
