Scope and Content Hamiltonhill Basin Workshops, Applecross Street, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow The Glasgow branch of the Forth & Clyde Canal was completed to its first terminus at Hamiltonhill in 1777. In due course, possibly after the extension of the branch to Port Dundas was opened in 1790, a maintenance depot was built on the north side of the 1777 basin. This shows the oldest part of the depot as it was in 1965. The main maintenance workshops were to the left. The offices in this building served all British Waterways canals in Scotland, with sub-offices at Ardrishaig and in Inverness. In the early 1990s a large new office was built on a site to the right in this view. The buildings seen here are now disused, and await a new use. With the revival of the Lowland canals a new use seems likely. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
