Scope and Content St Margaret's Works, Foundry Street, Dunfermline, Fife This was one of a number of factories in Dunfermline built from the 1840s for the power-loom weaving of linen damask tableware. This one was founded in 1870, and was of medium size. This shows the frontage of the new range added in 1900, and linked to the original 1870 block by a footbridge. The balustraded tower probably housed a water tank. The elaborate architecture reflects competition for esteem among Dunfermline manufacturers. The manufacture of linen damask tableware declined after World War I. This works, with the adjacent Pilmuir Works, was acquired by The Dunlop Tyre Co, and adapted for the manufacture of tyre cord for the making of pneumatic tyres. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
