Scope and Content Gravestone of Janet Mores, Burial-Ground and Mausoleum, St Kattan's Chapel, Aberuthven, Perth & Kinross This shows the winged soul which forms the top of the gravestone. Its head rests on a narrow neck which links it to the border of the inscribed stone. The features are simply defined, but wear a haunting expression. The wings are incised with a series of grooves to suggest feathers. Folk art carvings like this example can be compared to similar examples found in American graveyards, particularly those in New England. Sculptures in American graveyards are perhaps more widely appreciated than their equivalents in Scotland. Tours are run, and souvenir guides, and even T-shirts, produced to encourage a wider interest in the sculptures. This gravestone commemorates Janet Mores, who died c.1720. Most of the inscription is no longer visible, as the stone has sunk into the ground. It begins: 'HERE LYES THE CORPS/OF JANET MORES...'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
