Scope and Content Nos 1-26 Long Row, New Lanark, South Lanarkshire New Lanark was founded as a cotton mill village in 1784 by David Dale and Richard Arkwright to use the latter's package of processes to spin cotton yarn (twist) by water power. The village was managed from 1799 to the mid-1820s by Robert Owen, and continued to spin cotton until 1968. This shows Long Row, the longest of the blocks of tenements built between 1785 and 1799 by David Dale's direct labour squad. Like Mantilla Row and Braxfield Row it is only one house deep, the others being two houses deep. As can be seen from the washing hanging out of some of the windows, some of the houses were still occupied in 1971. Most of the housing at the north-west end of the village, including Long Row, was reconditioned in the 1970s and 1980s, partly by Community Programme workers. Most of it is now privately owned, but some of the Long Row houses are rented, and Wee Row is now a youth hostel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
