Scope and Content Warehouses, East Old Dock and Commercial Street, Leith, Edinburgh Leith's role as the port of south-eastern Scotland was greatly enhanced by the construction in 1800-6 of the first of a pair of large wet docks designed by John Rennie. A second followed, to the west, in 1811-17. This shows the range of warehouses that were built c.1810 on the north side of Commercial Street and the south side of the docks, as a defensive edge to the dock estate. This is the dock side of the range, looking west. The warehouses were designed by John Paterson, resident engineer for the docks. The East and West Docks were filled in in the late 1960s, but these warehouses have survived, and have been converted to other uses. The infilled docks have also been redeveloped, with the actual site of the docks now a car park. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
