Scope and Content Wilderbank Mill, Wilderhaugh Street, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This large mill complex was built between 1862 and 1890 by William Brown & Sons for the manufacture of tweed. Like most mills of the period it was an integrated mill, that is, it spun yarn and wove it into cloth. This shows part of a spinning mule made by Platt Brothers of Oldham. In the background are rolls of rovings, with drawing rollers in front, and then the yarn in the making is pulled out and twisted by the carriage on the right. The yarn will then be wound on to the 'cops' on the carriage. The mule has remained in use in wool spinning as it makes a better yarn than the ring frame. This works was a victim of the downturn in demand for high-quality tweed which occurred in the 1970s. The mill was closed in the late 1970s, and speedily demolished.
