Scope and Content Wilderbank Mill, Wilderhaugh Street, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This large mill complex was built between 1862 and 1890 by William Brown & Sons for the manufacture of tweed. Like most mills of the period it was an integrated mill, that is, it spun yarn and wove it into cloth. This shows a power loom of a standard type, made by Hattersleys, a Yorkshire firm. The mechanism at the top of the loom on the left is a dobby, a device for simple pattern selection, and below it is a drop box with six shuttles, allowing six colours of weft (cross threads). This works was a victim of the downturn in demand for high-quality tweed which occurred in the 1970s. The mill was closed in the late 1970s, and speedily demolished.
