Scope and Content City Sawmills, No 119 Lower Craighall Road, Port Dundas, Glasgow Port Dundas was the effective terminus of the Glasgow Branch of the Forth & Clyde Canal after 1790. It enjoyed an extensive trade with Europe, especially in grain and timber. Latterly the largest importer was the City Sawmills of Brownlee & Co Ltd. This shows the largest building in the complex, which appears to have housed the sawmill machinery and other woodworking equipment. The wide arched openings at ground-floor level are unusual, and suggest that this area was originally open-sided. The City Sawmills were founded in 1849 by James Brownlee, timber merchant. The firm had premises on both sides of Craighall Road, including a wharf on the Forth & Clyde Canal. They also had premises in Grangemouth, and in Kilmarnock.
