Scope and Content Anderston Grain Mills, No 27 Washington Street, Glasgow The oldest part of this complex was built as a cotton store before 1845, and converted into a grain mill in 1865 for Harvie & McGavin. At that stage a four-storeyed red and white brick granary and a small office block were added. The whole complex was surrounded by other buildings. This shows the frontage of the granary. The ornamental red and white brick treatment is striking, especially in view of the enclosed site, but is characteristic of 1860s industrial buildings in Scotland. In 1968 this mill was still being operated by Harvie & McGavin Ltd, and was engaged primarily in polishing rice (removing the husks from the grain). They had taken this up to supply the Lascar crews of ships using Glasgow docks. The mill has been demolished since this photograph was taken, but the granary is now part of an hotel.
