Scope and Content Huddersfield Mill (Bridge Mill), Huddersfield Street, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This works was founded in 1818 by a consortium of four local manufacturers, presumably as a spinning mill to provide them with yarn to put out to hand-loom weavers to make up into cloth. This shows the mill yard, with the very large chimney which served the boiler house. This chimney is, unusually, built of red terracotta bricks. The chimney to the right served Nether (Abbotsford) Mill, and probably dates from 1866. This mill was latterly owned by Peter Anderson Ltd, makers of tweeds, and was known as Bridge Mill. It was still in use in 1969, and though it still survived into the 1970s, has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
