Scope and Content Nether Mill (Abbotsford Mill), Huddersfield Street, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This works was founded in 1805, and extended in 1866, at a time when the Borders woollen industry was re-equipping with self-acting mules for spinning, and power-looms for weaving. The original mill was water-powered, the additions, steam-powered. This shows the frontage of the mills to Huddersfield Street. The 1805 mill is in the centre, its small windows typical of early Borders mills. The windowless building is the end of a range of weaving sheds, probably part of the 1866 remodelling of the mills. This mill was still in use in 1968, and the water turbine was still supplying power for the machinery. It remained an integrated spinning and weaving mill, making high-quality tweeds and other worsted cloths. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
