Scope and Content Nether Mill (Abbotsford Mill), Huddersfield Street, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This works was founded in 1805, and extended in 1866, at a time when the Borders woollen industry was re-equipping with self-acting mules for spinning, and power-looms for weaving. The original mill was water-powered, the additions, steam-powered. This shows the courtyard of the mill, with part of the 1805 block on the right. The railing protects the lade where it enters the basement of the mill, where a water turbine had replaced the original waterwheel. Beyond the mill are a steam engine house and its associated boiler house. This mill was still in use in 1968, and the water turbine was still supplying power for the machinery. It remained an integrated spinning and weaving mill, making high-quality tweeds and other worsted cloths. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
