Scope and Content Glasgow Fruit Market, Nos 60-106 Candleriggs, Glasgow This complex was founded in 1817 as the Bazaar, by James Cleland, to house the city's 'green' and cheese markets. It was subsequently greatly enlarged and reconstructed in 1852-3 and again in 1907, to become the city's fruit and vegetable market. This shows the passage which linked the 1907 extension to the market to the market hall built in 1852-3 to designs by John Carrick and Bell & Miller. This hall is largely of cast iron construction. This market closed in 1968, when a new fruit market was opened at Balornock, where road access is much easier. After a period of disuse the 1907 extension to the market was converted to house a range of leisure and retail uses. The 1852-3 building is used as a performance venue.
