Scope and Content Craig Bridge, Sandford, South Lanarkshire This two-span bridge now carries a minor road over the Avon Water, but was originally built as part of one of the main routes between Ayrshire and Lanark, and ultimately to Edinburgh. It was by-passed in the 1930s by a high-level, reinforced concrete arch bridge. This shows the bridge from the south-west. Note the triangular cutwater in the centre, the slight hump, and the narrowing of the roadway where it passes over the arches. All these features suggest that the bridge is probably of mid-18th-century date. Lanarkshire County Council had an ambitious programme of road improvement in the inter-war years, which included by-passing this structure. The Council was, however, enlightened in its approach to preserving by-passed bridges, as here. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
