Scope and Content West Station, Grantown-on-Spey, Highland This station was opened in 1863 by the Inverness & Perth Junction Railway, whose line from Forres to Dunkeld, linking existing railways, gave Inverness its first reasonably direct route to the south. This shows the north-bound end of the station, with the lattice-girder footbridge, and part of the awning of the south-bound platform building. The signal box probably dates from the 1950s. The crossing beyond the box was for the signalman to use for exchanging tokens for single-line working. The route via Grantown lost much of its importance in 1897, when a more direct route from Inverness to Aviemore was opened. The Forres-Aviemore line closed in 1965. This station was intact in 1968, but had been demolished by 1974, and the site converted into an industrial estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
