Scope and Content Alexandra Park Laundry, Nos 21-39 Hilton Gardens, Glasgow The first part of this complex was built in about 1901 for J A Ferrier & Co, dyers and cleaners. After World War I it was acquired by William Beardmore & Co Ltd and extended to provide a service and repair depot for vehicles manufactured by the company. This shows the Hilton Gardens frontage of the works from the south. It seems likely that the two nearest bays were the original laundry, and that the five bays of north-lit sheds were added by Beardmores. In 1968 the premises were known as the Strathclyde Tube Works. After World War I, Beardmores, like other armaments manufacturers, were faced with finding a new use for buildings and machinery installed to make munitions. Like many others, the firm chose to diversify into motor manufacture. This works was used to make private cars between 1920 and 1928. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
