Scope and Content Methil Docks, Methil, Fife This very large dock system was built for the shipment of coal from pits belonging to the Wemyss family. The first dock was completed in 1887, and a second, outer dock was added in 1894-1900. The third and largest dock was built in 1908-13. This shows the north side of the third dock, which was designed by Blyth & Blyth of Edinburgh, with a coal hoist, used for loading coal into ships. Full coal wagons came in on the high-level line on the left, and the empties left on the low-level line. The dock was used for coal shipment until 1970, but for many years the quantities shipped were small. In its heyday the port shipped more than 3 million tons of coal a year. The dock is still used by small coasters. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
