Scope and Content Locomotive Shed and Workshops, Wemyss Private Railway, East Wemyss, Fife This railway was built c.1900 to connect several collieries belonging to the Wemyss Coal Co Ltd with the harbour at Methil which belonged to the Wemyss family. The railway escaped the nationalisation of both the railways and the coal mines in 1947-8, and remained independent until it closed in 1970. This shows the locomotive depot and workshops of the railway at East Wemyss. The locomotive on the left had just been acquired, third-hand, by the railway, and the one in the shed had been built for the railway in 1938. This railway was badly hit in 1967 by an underground fire in the Michael Pit at East Wemyss, the source of much of its traffic. When the Lochhead Pit closed in 1970 the railway closed with it.
