Scope and Content Merino-spinning Mill, No 335 St Vincent Street, Glasgow This mill was built in about 1835 for C S Cochran & Co, worsted and woollen spinners. It was designed to spin wool from merino sheep, which have long and silky fleeces, and which were reared in Australia. The wool was imported through Glasgow harbour. This shows the interior of the ground floor, immediately before the building was demolished. On the right is the central row of cast iron columns. This was flanked on either side by a row of wooden pillars, one row of which can be seen on the left. This hybrid construction, part timber, part cast iron, was also found in the nearby, and slightly earlier, Bishop Garden Weaving Factory, suggesting that these two works had the same designer. This works was demolished in 1967-8 to make way for the approaches to the Kingston Bridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
