Scope and Content Gravestone of Catherine Dwar, St Fillan's Chapel and Burial-Ground, St Fillans, Perth & Kinross This gravestone features a tree whose branches neatly fill the pointed top of the stone. It grows from an rectangular panel which was probably once inscribed. The tree is pierced by a sword which has a crown balanced on its blade. The borders are finely sculpted with ridged decoration. The other side of this stone shows Adam and Eve (before the Fallof Man) with flowers in the Garden of Eden. The objects on this gravestone may represent the Tree of Life (mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 3:24, where it is protected by a flaming sword) being pierced by the sword of Death. Eternal life is represented as the outcome of this violent event in the shape of the Crown of Righteousness which awaits the godly in Heaven. This gravestone commemorates Catherine Dwar, who died in 1729. It is inscribed: 'HER LYES CATHERINE DWAR/WHO DYED 2nd MAY 1729/AGED 55 YEARS/AIN DO AND SPARE NOT'.
