Scope and Content Cowlairs Works, Carlisle Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway as their Glasgow locomotive sheds and maintenance works. After the North British Railway absorbed the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway in 1865 it developed the works as its central workshops, moving the locomotive shed to Eastfield in 1904. This shows the east side of the wagon shops from the north-east. The 'ridge and furrow' roof is supported on wrought-iron trusses running across the building, with intermediate support from cast iron columns. There is extensive roof glazing. The red and white brick suggests a date of c.1870. These workshops were designed for building and repairing wagons. At first, these wagons were mainly of wooden construction, and the supporting facilities included a sawmill and timber stores. The number of wagons to be dealt with is suggested by the length of this building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
