Scope and Content Cowlairs Works, Carlisle Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway as their Glasgow locomotive sheds and maintenance works. After the North British Railway absorbed the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway in 1865 it developed the works as its central workshops, moving the locomotive shed to Eastfield in 1904. This shows the north front of one of the two bays of erecting shops, which, judging by the style of the brickwork were built in about 1870, when the North British Railway expanded the works to deal with all its heavy locomotive repairs and new construction. The erecting shop was the core of the locomotive part of the works. Locomotives coming in for repair were partly dismantled here, and components such as boilers, wheels and motion parts sent to specialist shops. The repaired or replaced parts were then reassembled, or 'erected', here. This photograph was taken while the shops were being demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
