Scope and Content Cowlairs Works, Carlisle Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway as their Glasgow locomotive sheds and maintenance works. After the North British Railway absorbed the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway in 1865 it developed the works as its central workshops, moving the locomotive shed to Eastfield in 1904. This shows part of the turning and machine shop, illustrating its construction. There are four rows of cast iron columns across the space, and eight along it. The columns across the building are linked by arched beams which support the timber framing of the roof. This structure was unique in Scotland, and gave the building strength and lightness. It continued in use as a machine shop until the works closed in 1968. The works was quickly demolished, and the site is now an industrial estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
