Scope and Content Cowlairs Works, Carlisle Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway as their Glasgow locomotive sheds and maintenance works. After the North British Railway absorbed the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway in 1865 it developed the works as its central workshops, moving the locomotive shed to Eastfield in 1904. This shows the interior of the turning and machine shop, nine bays long by five bays wide, with timber roof trusses supported on cast iron columns and arched beams. The walls are of masonry construction. This was part of the original Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway workshops. Its structure was unique in Scotland, and a very beautiful piece of structural design. It was demolished in 1968, along with the rest of the works. The site is now an industrial estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
