Scope and Content Toll-house, No 1 Cross Street, Glasgow This toll-house was built in about 1800. It is situated at the junction of what are still important north-south and east-west routes. It is one of two circular former toll-houses in the Glasgow area, the other being the 'Round Toll' at the corner of Garscube and Possil Roads, which was demolished in the 19th century. This shows the toll-house from the south-west. Though boarded up in this view, it had been inhabited until only a short time earlier. In the background are two of the then-new tower blocks built in the earlier 1960s to replace the old village of Pollokshaws. Tolls were abolished on Scottish roads and bridges in the late 1880s, but most toll-houses were retained as dwellings or for other purposes. This one survived the wholesale redevelopment of the surrounding area, and road realignment, and is now preserved in the centre of a roundabout. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
