Scope and Content Newlandsfield Print & Bleach Works, No 109 Riverford Road, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1812 for the printing and bleaching of cotton cloth, using the water of the White Cart Water. It was situated in Pollokshaws, which was, at the time, a village with a reputation for hand-loom weaving. This shows the north range of the works, with the office at the end of a long single-storeyed range. The White Cart Water runs behind these buildings. In 1968 they were used as a cooperage by Universal Container (UK) Ltd. This was a large complex for its period, but it did not make the transition to mass production like the calico-printing works in the Vale of Leven and Barrhead. Its single- and two-storeyed buildings, however, made it very suitable for reuse. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
