Scope and Content New Lanark Mills, South Lanarkshire New Lanark Mills were established by David Dale and Richard Arkwright, the first mill being opened in 1786. Four mills were built before Robert Owen took over the management of the mills in 1799. In 1881 they were adapted to make fishing nets and canvas, as well as continuing to spin cotton. This shows the west side of the mechanics' workshop, built during Robert Owen's management to allow No 4 Mill to be released for cotton spinning. Like most of the buildings in the village this one has a basement. The arch carried water to a waterwheel serving the foundries, on the left. This photograph was taken after the Gourock Ropework Co Ltd, owners of the mills, had closed them, and dismantling of machinery had already begun. The mills have had a chequered history since then, but have been largely restored, and achieved World Heritage Site status in 2001. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
