Scope and Content New Lanark Mills, South Lanarkshire New Lanark Mills were established by David Dale and Richard Arkwright, the first mill being opened in 1786. Four mills were built before Robert Owen took over the management of the mills in 1799. In 1881 they were adapted to make fishing nets and canvas, as well as continuing to spin cotton. This shows the rear of No 2 Mill, completed in about 1789, with part of No 3 Mill on the right. This rear wall of No 2 Mill is all that is left after it was widened in the 1880s, following the loss of No 4 Mill by fire. The triangular brick structure covered the drive from a water turbine. This photograph was taken after the Gourock Ropework Co Ltd, owners of the mills, had closed them, and dismantling of machinery had already begun. The mills have had a chequered history since then, but have been largely restored, and achieved World Heritage Site status in 2001. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
