Scope and Content Glasgow Corporation Cleansing Department Depot, Nos 142-4 Bell Street, Glasgow This building was constructed in 1896-8 for Glasgow Corporation Cleansing Department, to designs by A W Wheatley, engineer to the department. It was a base for horse-drawn refuse-collecting lorries. The vehicles were kept on the ground floor, and there were stables, plus grain and hay stores, above. This shows the building from the north-west, with the Bell Street frontage on the left. The pend gave access to a central courtyard, round which the stables and stores were arranged. After horse-drawn dust carts were phased out in the 1950s the building continued to provide stabling for police horses. It was by far the most architectural of the department's depots, probably because it was in an area where the corporation was active in city improvement. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
