Scope and Content Steam Crane, Victoria Dock, Dundee The Victoria and Camperdown Docks were built between 1863 and 1875, greatly increasing the scale of Dundee as a port. This heavy steam crane was installed in 1874, and made by J Taylor & Co of Liverpool. This shows the crane from the east. The massive masonry base supports a post round which the crane mechanism revolves. Both the body of the crane and the tubular jib are made of iron plates riveted together. As the smoke shows, the crane was in steam when the photograph was taken. This was one of the earliest heavy steam cranes in Scotland, and one of the last to survive. However, it was demolished in about 1970. It was installed for fitting out steamships, and for shipping heavy machinery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
